Thanks to Ko, we hit up the Wyclef concert Wednesday night at the Nokia Theater. The concert was fresh with Lyfe Jennings, Estelle (John Legend’s up and coming artist) and the man himself, Wyclef. It was dope because he brought out guest performers along the way and really got down with the audience. All the ol goodies were sung, even off the Fugees, along with tracks of his new album, Carnival Vol.II. He is a man of many talents.
Last night, I got hooked up to a few events. Thanks to Elz from the Hip Hop Theatre, I got to check out a play titled In Spite of Everything by folks from the bay, The Suicide Kings. Held at The Public Theater, the play was well written and its artists delivered it powerfully. It was a refreshing change from my usual night out. Peep the synopsis:
“In Spite of Everything features the Bay Area´s most dynamic spoken word trio theatrically documenting their unlikely movement away from the precipice of their own lives, to the center of the public school system in Northern California. The Kings´ underdog aesthetic builds empathy and compassion for the forgotten elements of society, fearlessly speaking ugly truths using intricately beautiful imagery and verse. The plot turns on the day after a school shooting in an un-named American town, as school administrators ask themselves the perennial question “What went wrong?”"
After the play, Cameron and I strolled through the slushes over to SOBs to check out Ohmega Watts and Teedra Moses. Alex D. of SOBs hooked it up with the guestlist which was great. Nothing better than a free night all around everywhere you go. While Teedra has a good voice, I wasn’t as moved by her songs she performed. Maybe it’s just me? Alex thought she was good, even better than Goapele which was the last show I saw there but I had to disagree. But who am I to judge since I can’t even sing at all. ha.
